The artist
Meet Ella. (the one with paint on her glasses)
She grew up in a small town in the East Free State, where the nights were long and the radio was always on. Young Ella would sit in her room for hours, listening to stories and sketching the characters exactly as she imagined them: crooked hats, big noses, bicycles and all.
She never went to art school. Instead she learned by trying everything, with informal training in whatever medium she could get her hands on. At 27 she took the leap and became a full-time painter, starting with pastels and inspired by the work of Pieter van der Westhuizen.
Landscapes came next. Then came Paris. One trip through its streets, coffee shops and bakeries and she was hooked on everyday life in full colour. Bicycles crept into nearly every painting. To Ella they're the path of your life: you keep moving, you take people along, and you notice the flowers on the way.
These days she paints from her studio in George, on the Garden Route, where the mountains run right down to the sea and the light is ridiculously good. Many private and corporate exhibitions later (an overseas show is firmly on the wish list), her work is bright, busy and unashamedly optimistic. Ask her to sum it all up and you'll get three words:
